Welcome to Bonfire, Gillian!

Gillian is a super talented graphic designer and art director, and we’re thrilled that she’ll be joining the Bonfire squadron. Find out a little bit more about her likes, dislikes and whale preferences below…

Where were you born?

I was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Yes, the place that has snow on the ground in June. (mental note: stop complaining about cold Saint John weather.)

What’s your educational background?

I have a high school diploma from Fiji, a little bit of university from Hawaii, and a lot of university from the University of New South Wales. I graduated with a Bachelor of Design.

What experience do you have with marketing and communications?

I have been working in marketing and communications for 14 years, in agencies in both Australia and Canada. Every place I’ve worked has been super fun, and I’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazing people, near and far.

What’s your favorite thing about the job you have?

The best part of my job is that it doesn’t feel like a job. I’m excited to do the work on my to-do list, and to hang out with the smart people around me.

What’s something you’re passionate about that a stranger might be surprised by?

Ask me about CrossFit. Wait… maybe don’t. 😀

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?

To choose only one place would be too hard! I loved living in Fiji and Australia, and I think I would have a hard time choosing between the two – I would love to go back to both.

Quick hitters! Cats or dogs?

I love my one and only Honey-cat, but I would categorize myself as a dog-pal.

Coffee or tea?

I switch to tea after I finish my litre of breakfast coffee.

Buskers on the Bay, Area 506 or Fundy Fringe Festival?

I’ve heard they are all super fun times, but I’m more of a homebody. I’ll happily partake in deck beers or a bonfire on the beach instead.

Best whale — right, minke or humpback?

Right whale for sure. They have a thick layer of blubber, so replace that with 3 sweaters and we are basically the same. I’m perpetually chilly, so I always have 1-3 sweaters with me.

Best beach activity — reading, sunbathing, swimming or volleyball?

Best beach time: snacks and naps.

Favorite provincial flag (from a design perspective)?

I love how all the flags include elements that subtly reflect attributes of each province, but my favourite is definitely the Alberta flag. You can’t beat the gorgeous blue colour, and a simple little Alberta landscape in the middle.

Greater Saint John region booze — Hammond River, Yip, Loyalist City or Dunham’s Run?

I really like Loyalist City, hands down – they are the best. But hey — can I include northern New Brunswick booze too? I’m a b-i-g fan of Fils du Roy gin.

We’re b-i-g fans of YOU, Gillian! Welcome to the Bonfire team.
